Icon Series
Fall 2019-2020
The objectives for this project is to create a series of visually interrelated icons based on research of metaphoric as well as literal contexts. Rigorous reading and image searches beyond the obvious will inform the students of their ability of transforming ideas to artworks. Combining the visual research with acquired knowledge will advance the design research and broaden our perspectives of seeing and feeling.
This research brings students to the realization that icons can simplify, order, inform, direct, and clarify complexity. Through the gestalt principles of similarity, continuation, closure, proximity and figure/ground we develop icons with distinctive, visually dynamic results. The icons students create will become a system, even a language.
